​MillDuck is a boutique “coloured” alpaca stud where the focus is on quality.  

The above diagram summarises our breeding strategy.

Whilst we specialise in browns, fawns and blacks – quality improvement is always the primary focus in our breeding decisions – not colour.    

Our objective is to breed a well conformed alpaca in line with the Australian Alpaca Association Breed Standards – with a heavy cutting, soft handling, even fleece with good length, which holds its fineness.

We place equal importance on conformation and fleece traits.

Every mating decision at MillDuck is made in line with our breeding objective.
   
When making our breeding decisions we identify the female’s strengths and where she needs to improve to comply with our vision of the perfect MillDuck alpaca.  The next step is to select a male who is strong in the identified trait we are trying to improve - be it fleece or conformation.  By knowing the female’s strengths, we know where, if need be, we can trade off a trait in the male to gain our desired improvement.  In most instances one of our MillDuck Stud Males will be chosen, however we will use external males at times to ensure genetic diversity and vigour. 
 
The fact we are consistently competitive at all levels of shows in Australia, including the National Show, tends to suggest our breeding program is on the right track.
